I realize its next summer, but I'm trying to get some things taken care of for the wedding. One thing on my list is first song. Matt and I can't come up with a compromise. I know, I know. Should this be a warning of how our marriage is to be? Should we be getting married if we can't even agree on the first dance song? But it's hard. I like everything and Matt likes everything from 5 bands. He hated my pick Collide by Howie Day, which to me is a compromise because it's a person he enjoys. He came back at me with "that is Howie Day mainstream. I've been listening to Howie Day for a long time and (enter music snob rant here)." I know it's a bit trite to have a first dance song. And the last few weddings we attended, only a few I'd even consider being PLAYED at my reception, let alone the first dance. But I feel like it's important. I need advice, suggestions and opinions. And no, I don't mean about going through with it. There will be a wedding, but what the hell should we dance to? Which song screams Matt and I?
And nothing from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. I tried.

I might get laughed off the face of the earth for suggesting this but I really like Gavin Degraw's "We Belong Together"
We belong together,
Like the open seas and shores.
Wedded by the planet floor,
We've all been spoken for.
The hammer may strike,
Me dead on the ground,
A nail to my hand,
A cross on his crown.
We're done if, who we're undone,
Finished if who we are incomplete.
As one we are everything,
We are everything we need.
We belong together,
Like the open seas and shores.
Wedded by the planet floor,
We've all been spoken for.
What good is a life,
With no one to share,
The light of the moon,
The honor of a swear?
Will you try to live the way of which you speak?
Taste the milk of your mother earth's love?
Spread the word of consciousness you see?
We are everything we need.
We belong together,
Like the open seas and shores.
Wedded by the planet floor,
We've all been spoken for.
All this indecision.
All this independent strain.
Still we've got our hearts on save,
We've got our hearts on save.
Someday when you're lonely,
Sometime after all this bliss,
Somewhere lost in emptiness,
I hope you find this gift.
I hope you find this gift.
I hope you find this gift.
Or Beat It.
i'm a fan of "heartbeats" by jose gonzalez.
or "strokin'" by clarence carter:
When I start makin´ love
I don´t just make love...
I be strokin´
That´s what I be doin´, huh
I be strokin´
I stroke it to the east
And I stroke it to the west
And I stroke it to the woman that I love the best
I be strokin´
Let me ask you somethin´...
What time of the day do you like to make love
Have you ever made love just before breakfast
Have you ever made love while you watched the late, late show
Well, let me ask you this
Have you ever made love on a couch
Well, let me ask you this
Have you ever made love on the back seat of a car
I remember one time I made love on the back seat of a car
And the police came and shined his light on me, and I said:
´I´m strokin´, that´s what I´m doin´, I be strokin´´
I stroke it to the east
And I stroke it to the west
And I stroke it to the woman that I love the best
I be strokin´
Let me ask you something...
How long has it been since you made love, huh?
Did you make love yesterday
Did you make love last week
Did you make love last year
Or maybe it might be that you plannin´ on makin´ love tonight
But just remember, when you start making love
You make it hard, long, soft, short
And be strokin´
I be strokin´
I stroke it to the east
And I stroke it to the west
And I stroke it to the woman that I love the best, huh
I be strokin´
Now when I start making love to my woman
I don´t stop until I know she´s sas-ified
And I can always tell when she gets sas-ified
´Cause when she gets sas-fied she start calling my name
She´d say: ´Clarence Carter, Clarence Carter, Clarence Carter
Clarence Carter, ooooh shit, Clarence Carter´
The other night I was strokin´ my woman
And it got so good to her, you know what she told me
Let me tell you what she told me, she said:
´Stroke it Clarence Carter, but don´t stroke so fast
If my stuff ain´t tight enough, you can stick it up my...´ WOO!
I be strokin´ Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
I be strokin´
I stroke it to the east
And I stroke it to the west
And I stroke it to the woman that I love the best, huh
I be strokin´
I be strokin´ Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
I be strokin´, Yeah!
I be strokin´
I stroke it to the north
I stroke it to the south
I stroke it everywhere
I even stroke it with my... WOO!
I be strokin´
I be strokin´ Ha! Ha!
I be strokin´
oh wait, that's my song, sorry.
Glad to see someone ELSE can't sleep.
Sass-ified!
God damn you lowercase ron, I was going to post the same song!
well maybe if you had insomnia like us, you wouldn't have been trumped.
Or Lori Carson
Snow Come Down
I think you feel the way I feel
Though you don't want to say
I think you feel the way I feel
Though it's not the easy way
Wouldn't you like to be with me
Watching the snow come down
Watching the snow come down
Watching the snow?
I don't want to cause you any pain
I just want to love you
I don't want to fuck up anything
I just want to love you
I know you think I'm kind of strange
I just want to love you, just want to love you
Just want to love you
Every time I see your face
I can hardly breathe
Every time I see your face
I feel stupid and happy
Wouldn't you like to be with me
Watching the snow come down
Watching the snow come down
watching the snow?
I don't want to cause you any pain
I'd like to give you the world
I don't want to fuck up anything
I want to be your girl
I know, you think I'm kind of strange
I just want to love, Just want to love you
Just want to love you
Perhaps something from the Top Gun soundtrack? Maybe a little Kenny Loggins, Danger Zone?
@Ron - great rons think alike.
i was just too amped up from the erie blogger meetup to sleep... one that tam just conviently didn't show up to..... what's up with that?
i also suggest "eye of the tiger" for your first dance song.. or some phil collins.
Try Edwin McCain's I Could Not Ask For More.
I Could Not Ask for More
Lying here with you • Listening to the rain • Smiling just to see the smile upon your face • These are the moments I thank God that I'm alive • These are the moments • I'll remember all my life • I found all I've waited for • And I could not ask for more • Looking in your eyes • Seeing all I need • Everything you are is everything to me • These are the moments • I know heaven must exist • These are the moments I know all I need is this • I have all I've waited for • And I could not ask for more • I could not ask for more than this time together • I could not ask for more than this time with you • Every prayer has been answered • Every dream I have's come true • And right here in this moment is right where I'm meant to be • Here with you here with me • These are the moments I thank God that I'm alive • These are the moments I'll remember all my life • I've got all I've waited for • And I could not ask for more • Chorus • I could not ask for more than the love you give me 'Coz it's all I've waited for • And I could not ask for more • I could not ask for more
Oh oh oh!!! How about Limp Bizkit's "All For The Nookie"??
Now THAT'S funny!
Stangers in the Night would fit as you met at night and now look.
Fast or serious? Slow or silly?
I had a terrible dream right before our wedding that Brian chose to commemorate the start of our married life together with "Nookie" by Limp Bizkit. It was one of the worst wedding jitter dreams I had.
I recommend I'll Stand by You by the Pretenders or At Last by Etta James. Two of my favorite songs.
not exactly silly but not slow either. See it's so hard!
last wedding i was at, their song was by metallica.
you know collide is a few years old but I've been hearing it a lot lately. I know being the ex my suggestion already gets a negative vote, but I like Iron and Wine's Naked As We Came
She says wake up it's no use pretending
I'll keep stealing breathing her
Birds are leaving over Autumn's ending
One of us will die inside these arms
Eyes wide open
Naked as we came
One will spread our
Ashes round the yard
She says if I leave before you darling
Don't you waste me in the ground
I lay smiling like our sleeping children
One of us will die inside these arms
Eyes wide open
Naked as we came
One will spread our
Ashes round the yard
You know, Jon and I had More Than Words by Extreme for our first dance. Just an idea...
Saying I love you
Is not the words I want to hear from you
Its not that I want you
Not to say, but if you only knew
How easy it would be to show me how you feel
More than words is all you have to do to make it real
Then you wouldnt have to say that you love me
Cos Id already know
What would you do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say if I took those words away
Then you couldnt make things new
Just by saying I love you
More than words
Now Ive tried to talk to you and make you understand
All you have to do is close your eyes
And just reach out your hands and touch me
Hold me close dont ever let me go
More than words is all I ever needed you to show
Then you wouldnt have to say that you love me
Cos Id already know
What would you do if my heart was torn in two
More than words to show you feel
That your love for me is real
What would you say if I took those words away
Then you couldnt make things new
Just by saying I love you
More than words
Well you can't really go wrong with a Beatles song. Most are about love, no matter the tempo. I like "I Will" and "Here, There And Everywhere" for weddings.
Our song is "In My Life," which has wonderful lyrics. "Something" is also lovely, lyrically.
"When I'm 64" is oddly romantic and has an unusual beat.
"God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys is nice and has a not-exactly-slow beat. It's the end song in Boogie Nights, which gives it a little zip ;)
Here via Eden.
My favorite lovey song is Night and Day by Cole Porter. Everyone and their mama has done a version of it so it's not too hard to find one in a suitable tempo.
Like the beat beat beat of the tom-tom
When the jungle shadows fall
Like the tick tick tock of the stately clock
As it stands against the wall
Like the drip drip drip of the raindrops
When the summer shower is through
So a voice within me keeps repeating you, you, you
Night and day, you are the one
Only you beneath the moon or under the sun
Whether near to me, or far
Its no matter darling where you are
I think of you
Day and night, night and day, why is it so
That this longing for you follows wherever I go
In the roaring traffics boom
In the silence of my lonely room
I think of you
Day and night, night and day
Under the hide of me
Theres an oh such a hungry yearning burning inside of me
And this torment wont be through
Until you let me spend my life making love to you
Day and night, night and day
I meant to sing this to my husband at my wedding. Still plan to when we renew our vows in the future.
If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you.
When mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.
Kind of woman, I give you my all; Kind of woman, nothing more.
Little drops of rain whisper of the pain, tears of love lost in the days gone by.
My love is strong, with you there is no wrong,
together we shall go until we die. My, my, my, my
inspiration is what you are to me, inspiration, look... see.
And so today, my world it smiles, your hand in mine, we walk the miles,
And thanks to you it will be done, for you to me are the only one.
Happiness, no more be sad, happiness....I'm glad.
If the sun refused to shine, I would still be loving you
Mountains crumble to the sea, there will still be you and me.
Thank you
Led Zeppelin
Tori Amos does a great cover of this song.
Popping over from Eden. :)
Wow thank you all so much. Ihonestly didn't think anyone would take this seriously.
And I'm surprised no one said "tammy" from Debbie Reynolds. But thank you for refraining.
Hmm, is there any music that you recall playing when something important was happening in your relationship? It might be nice to have something that you can pair with happy memories of each other. Some of the other song selections are good, but I am a big believer in weddings are about the couple and their personal history.
Well, there's "Back That Ass Up" (our first dance) and "I Like The Way You Move" (our second dance). But I'm not sure if those really fit.
Sorry so late to the party. Our song was Ever The Same, by Rob Thomas.
We were drawn from the weeds
We were brave like soldiers
Falling down under the pale moonlight
You were holding to me
Like a someone broken
And I couldn't tell you but I'm telling you now
Just let me hold you while you're falling apart
Just let me hold you so we both fall down
Fall on me
Tell me everything you want me to be
Forever with you forever in me
Ever the same
We would stand in the wind
We were free like water
Flowing down
Under the warmth of the sun
Now it's cold and we're scared
And we've both been shaken
Look at us
Man, this doesn't need to be the end
Just let me hold you while you're falling apart
Just let me hold you so we both fall down
Fall on me tell me everything you want me to be
Forever with you
Forever in me
Ever the same
Call on me
I'll be there for you and you'll be there for me
Forever it's you
Forever in me
Ever the same
You may need me there
To carry all your weight
But you're no burden I assure
You tide me over
With a warmth I'll not forget
But I can only give you love
