A cartoon is any of several forms of art, with varied meanings that evolved from one to another.

Cartoon Cartoons is the name given to the signature cartoons of Cartoon Network, originally created by Hanna-Barbera (later Cartoon Network Studios). Cartoon Cartoons do not include older shows that were shown in reruns, such as The Flintstones.
The current most popular Cartoon Cartoon is Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, while the most recent is Immortal Grand Prix. Cartoon Cartoons were first showcased in the What-A-Cartoon! show, and its spin-offs Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, Dexter's Laboratory, and The PowerPuff Girls.
Though Cartoon Network has not used this term officially for a while, the name has still stuck in most circles. My favorite when I was little (I realize it wasn't really a cartoon but claymation) was GUMBY!!!!! I actually have Gumby movies on my netflix cue. Gotta Love Gumby and Pokey!!!
