Why Do They Call Them Cartoons?

So, I was trying to remember all those cool cartoons that used to be on when I was little. The ones that were actually drawn by hand with a pencil and paper at one time. Here are a few )in no particular order) I remember and I was hoping you all could help me add to the list. Britain needs to know what good cartoons are all about.

Bugs Bunny and all those other characters
He Man

Who, Captain Planet? Definitely.

Scooby Doo? No way, that dog was the kind of dog that would punch you in the face while consuming a case of beer and a 2 foot hoagie. And I mean CONSUME THE ENTIRE CASE, no wussy gulping. Drinking is for bitches, swallowing cans whole is for cartoon heroes.

I miss old Nickelodeon. With You Can't Do That On Television, although I realize it was not a cartoon.

Ron (Jr),

Remember when we used to collect all those nintendo cards? They were like instant lottery tickets or some shit. You'd scratch them off and what??? There were no prizes or anything. What was the point of that?

A cartoon is any of several forms of art, with varied meanings that evolved from one to another.

An animated cartoon is a moving picture generated by photographing drawings frame-by-frame, as opposed to a normal movie, which is produced by shooting 24 frames a second of actual moving persons or objects.

Because of the stylistic similarities between comic strips and early animated movies, "cartoon" came to refer to animation, and this is the sense in which "cartoon" is most commonly used today. These are usually shown on television or in cinemas and are created by showing illustrated images in rapid succession to give the impression of movement. In this meaning, the word cartoon is sometimes shortened to toon (which may be a corruption of "Looney Tunes" and was popularized by the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit). Although the term can be applied to any animated presentation, it is most often used in reference to programs for children, featuring anthropomorphized animals, superheroes, the adventures of child protagonists, and other related genres. Animated material which does not fit the traditional conventions of Western animation, such as Japanese anime can also be called cartoons.

Cartoon Cartoons is the name given to the signature cartoons of Cartoon Network, originally created by Hanna-Barbera (later Cartoon Network Studios). Cartoon Cartoons do not include older shows that were shown in reruns, such as The Flintstones.

The current most popular Cartoon Cartoon is Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, while the most recent is Immortal Grand Prix. Cartoon Cartoons were first showcased in the What-A-Cartoon! show, and its spin-offs Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, Dexter's Laboratory, and The PowerPuff Girls.

Though Cartoon Network has not used this term officially for a while, the name has still stuck in most circles. As of September 2005, the name is used for a half-hour program featuring episodes of older Cartoon Cartoons that are no longer shown regularly on the network. This show, The Cartoon Cartoon Show is the only one to use the Cartoon Cartoons logo.

The term "illustrated radio" became a popular moniker for the ubiquitous saturday morning cartoon (animated TV programs for children aired during daytime hours). The animation in such shows is often very simple, due to economic constraints. However, some studios endeavour to produce high-quality programming in spite of limited budgets and tight schedules.

Hanna-Barbera's 1960s show, "The Flintstones" was one of the first truly successful primetime series and has been on the air ever since. Today, "The Simpsons" tops the popularity lists.

More than one person has said I should be the voice of a cartoon. Do I take this as a compliment?

And thank you Mike for the information. I couldn't help but read that as if you were a robot.

Oh my! I forgot all about Gumby!
